India’s Innings: India vs Oman Asia Cup 2025

The PowerPlay decided the game. Abhishek Sharma, with his fearless stroke play, took on Oman’s bowlers and smashed 38 off just 19 balls. While Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson struggled against the swing, Abhishek’s counter-attack (six fours and three sixes in the PowerPlay) gave India the cushion they needed. Personally, I love when a youngster plays with such freedom—it sets the tone for the whole side.

Sanju Samson Player of the Match
Sanju Samson, Player of the Match in India vs Oman Asia Cup 2025, scored 56 runs off 45 balls to lead India’s batting.

After Abhishek fell, Sanju Samson held India’s innings together with a gritty 56. He was even dropped on 43, a chance Oman will regret. What stood out for me was how India experimented, sending Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, and Tilak Varma up the order. It slowed the scoring rate, but it also showed how India are preparing bench strength.

Tilak Varma struggled early, but then exploded at the death with two sixes. Even Harshit Rana joined the fun, finishing with a six off the final ball. India ended on 188/8, a total that always looked challenging.

Jatinder Singh and Aamir Kaleem opened solidly, taking Oman to 44/0 in the PowerPlay. India’s bowlers, especially Harshit Rana, looked rattled when the Omani openers targeted them with boundaries. Honestly, for a moment, I thought we might be in for an upset.

The real magic came when Aamir Kaleem (64) and Hammad Mirza (51) put together a 93-run stand. The highlight? Kaleem becoming the oldest cricketer to score a T20I half-century against a Full Member nation. That’s the kind of story that makes cricket beautiful experience standing tall against world-class opposition. Mirza, too, played fearless cricket, smashing Kuldeep Yadav for two sixes in one over.

Despite their efforts, India’s experience showed. Hardik Pandya’s boundary-saving catch broke the crucial partnership, and Arshdeep Singh sealed the deal by dismissing Vinayak Shukla for his 100th T20I wicket a huge personal milestone. Oman eventually fell short at 167/4, but they never looked like passengers.

This was Oman’s last game of the tournament, and even though they lost all three matches, they leave with pride. For India, the focus now shifts to the big clash against Pakistan in the Super 4s. If anything, this game showed India’s depth but also reminded us that even Associate nations can punch above their weight on the big stage.

Though a cricket match is more than just a battle to emerge victorious, stories such as the one which happened in the match between India and Oman in the Asia Cup 20205 add a more holistic view to it. For India, it may just be another group stage match which come easy to them, but for Aamir Kaleem and Hammad Mirza, the night was a perfect platform to showcase their grit and passion for the game.
